Technology and Ethics

Posted July 7, 2024, under The ExoFuture Alert

Technology continues to replace human workers.

Some people feel that we are moving in the direction of making people obsolete.

A few scientists envision technological advancement going beyond our control.

Some believe the world will come to an end in a war between humans and technology.

This is related to the idea of a world where computers and machines interface more and more closely.

This is all a question of the ethical use of technology.

Technological innovation that degrades or harms humans more than it helps is not ethical.

And where it enables a technological elite or technocracy to watch over and rule over us, that is far from ethical.

Big Tech has been experiencing a decline in ethics for decades.

Julie Inman Grant, a former Twitter employee and two-decade veteran of the technology sector told ABC, “Some of the largest, richest, most powerful tech companies in the world are turning a blind eye to crime scenes happening on their platforms, being hosted on their cloud-based services, being propagated through their messaging services and they’re simply not doing enough.”

Corporations in general tend to be much more concerned about profits for themselves and their shareholders than benefiting their customers.

One example of this is planned obsolescence.

Products are designed to become obsolete, irrelevant, no longer used, out of date, and replaced by something new.

One of the most famous instances of planned obsolesce comes from one of the biggest companies in the world: Apple.

In 2018, French prosecutors went after the company. Under French law, it is a crime to intentionally shorten the lifespan of a product. As a result, Apple had to pay a $27-million fine – an amount that they make in around 3 hours.

Another tactic that falls under planned obsolescence is to release new software updates that are incompatible with older devices to drive the need to upgrade hardware so your device can work properly.

With the release of ExoTech all the above unethical aspects of technology will begin to vanish.

And WE are making that happen.
