Social(?) Media
Three billion people, around 40% of the world’s population, use online social media, spending an average of two hours every day sharing, liking, tweeting, etc.
The word “social” comes from the Latin “socialis” an adjective which means of or pertaining to companionship; companionable, sociable, social.
But does today’s social media promote companionship and improve living with others?
An ongoing study of 8th-grade, 10th-grade and 12th-grade students shows a massive uptrend in so-called “depression” symptoms which correlate exactly with the increased use of social media and smartphones, starting around the year 2015.
In this study, participants were given statements about themselves including “I do not enjoy life,” “My life is not useful,” and “I can’t do anything right.”
“Yes” responses to those statements now approach fifty percent.
Why such a dramatic result?
Excessive use of smartphones and social media tends to disconnect people from the real things of life, including other people.
It substitutes flashing words and images on a flashing screen.
Further, the social media providers found they could increase profits by providing addictive and emotionally disturbing content.
So social media is not so social.
It is also controlled media heavily influenced and censored by tech giants and their financial masters.
ExoTech has the potential be a platform for a new social media that is truly social.
It can become the first major player in that field to operate in a socially responsible manner.
Plus the new social media provided by ExoTech will be far simpler, easier, and more powerful.
It will enable sane, prosurvival communications and be a much more pleasant experience.
And it will not censor technologies desperately needed by the inhabitants of this planet.
