Over the Rainbow
“Over the Rainbow” is a classic song sung by Judy Garland as Dorothy Gale in the famous 1939 musical movie The Wizard of Oz.
But Judy almost never got to sing what was to become her signature.
MGM executives had removed “Over the Rainbow” because they felt it slowed down the film.
Fortunately, producer Arthur Freed stepped in, telling studio head Louis B. Mayer, “The song stays—or I go.”
Mayer replied: “Let the boys have the damn song. Put it back in the picture. It can’t hurt.”
In a 2001 poll conducted by the Recording Industry Association of America and the National Endowment for the Arts, “Over the Rainbow” was voted the #1 song of all time.
“Over the Rainbow” has become the ultimate song of escape.
Before she starts singing, Judy as Dorothy speculates:
“Someplace where there isn’t any trouble . . . do you suppose there is such a place, Toto?
There must be. It’s not a place you can get to by a boat or train.
It’s far, far away . . . behind the moon . . . beyond the rain . . .”
And during the song, she sings:
“Someday I’ll wish upon a star
And wake up where the clouds are far behind me.
Where troubles melt like lemon drops,
High above the chimney tops,
That’s where you’ll find me.”
The fact that the song has been so popular shows that a lot of people must want to escape from something.
And sure enough, if we look around us, we see injustice, crime, war, insanity, poverty, a suppressive monetary system, and other oppressive influences.
So why shouldn’t we want to escape to somewhere less cruel and much more beautiful?
But another option would be to make the real world we live in better and more beautiful.
